This is my first SMH, how long is it going to take until we are ready to leave?

Leaving port typically happens with 55-60 (on a WF), and enters with full ship (75 on a WF).
Type /w to see how many aboard. You should also check out this video for more chat tips.

Once entered, these trips last anywhere from 1 hour all the way up until 3 hours.

Generally for WF Atlantis they require you stay for at least 90 mins from the point of entering or else they will mute you (i.e. never job you again).

The time spent for jobbing doesn't really factor into it, so it is always a good idea to set aside at least 2 hours for an Atlantis trip.

Once inside the SMH, how can you know how long it will take? Any indicators?

If enough people leave, we will need to exit at some point. You can type /w to see how many people on board. Usually WF Atlantis will start to exit at around 55- 60 people left onboard

Or any requirements?

Sometimes they have a goal as to how much booty they haul, but not always. Check out the booty on the vessel tab or when the DR comes up. Alternatively, you can check out the booty chest during breaks to see how much has been hauled.

And what's the payment normally?

That depends on whether they make it to port, and how much has been hauled. (In chests and PoE)

Generally though, the longer you stay, the higher your pay is. The more you station, the higher chance of you getting something good in a chest. The allure of the SMH is mostly in the chests, like "yea I might have a chance to get this rare item".

You'll get paid 5-15k at port for the trip, and then anything else in the boxes (chance of seahorse or karkinos or other shiny stuff)

You don't need to stay for the entire trip to get paid.

What's a nice item to get?

The seahorse familiar, in black or white color is by far the most valuable. But there are other things that you can get. Check here for a full list.

When does a boat sink?

Ships sink when damage reaches 100% (when the red thingy goes fully red)

Also these npc that ask to battle, should I do it? What are the advantages?

The NPCs are called dragoons... you can read a thingy I wrote on it here... Read the first few parts and the flowchart.

In a nutshell, you can get boxes for defeating them, but it takes away from the potential boxes that you may get for your stationing.

You can either take it or not take it, but do note that taking it will reset your indicator if it goes over the break.

Thanks to Espiration for asking these questions!

Other questions...

Why do some navers go for Cits, and others for just regular kills?

This pirate is  confused as to why anyone would still do regular Atlantis, since Citadels pay so much more.

Firstly, because the majority of earnings  is contingent upon  winning citadels, screening needs to be harsher for them. i.e., more exclusive, possibly slower to load.

Also because they rely on the winning of citadels, it’s a greater risk of the trip not going well.

It should be noted that even “Citadel Runs” will have elements of "regular" as well when they're not heading to and from cits.
